Safety promotional activities should also include the delivery of a training program that ensures everyone is competent to discharge their safety responsibilities.
Safety Communication
Safety communication ensures relevant safety information is shared across the organization to promote awareness, transparency, and continuous learning.
This includes communicating safety policy, objectives and SPIs, investigation outcomes, lessons learned, and emerging risks.
Through communication channels encourage reporting and support a positive safety culture, with employees actively engaged in improving safety performance.
Safety Training and Education
Safety training and education ensure personnel understand the organization’s SMS, their responsibilities, and their role in identification and management of operational risks.
Training should go beyond initial awareness, being role-specific, competency-based, and regularly updated to reflect operational changes, emerging risks, and lessons learned.
By strengthening safety knowledge and competencies at all levels, it supports effective safety management and positive safety culture.

Safety Culture Engagement
Through the combination of both, safety communication and training, a positive safety culture can be achieved through several actions and/or best practices, such as:
- Measure effectiveness through safety reporting rates, safety culture surveys and training program evaluations.
- Conduct Safety Awareness campaigns with senior management visibly supporting them.
- Translate investigations, incident reports, and industry safety data into practical lessons learned.
- Create forums for open dialogue between operational staff, safety specialists, and management (i.e. safety forums, workshops, and safety committees).
- Encourage participation in industry safety initiatives, conferences, and information-sharing platforms.
- Promote a strong Just Culture to build trust and support safety reporting.
