A runway excursion is one of the main areas of concern in the runway safety domain. According to the IATA's Safety Report, runway excursions have been the most common type of accident over the past ten years, with the landing phase being the most critical.
Runway excursions during the landing phase involve aircraft veering off the runway (Lateral excursions) and Aircraft exiting the upwind end of the runway (Runway overrun).
